loumc Response for Haiti

A Letter from Pastor Bruce

"As I write these words news updates tell of the devastation that has hit the island nation of Haiti. Reports speak of deaths in the thousands. I suspect that figure will only grow in the coming days and weeks. The Port Huron District Volunteers in Mission team currently in Haiti sent word that they are safe, but their travel plans to return home are up in the air. They are serving in Jeremie, Haiti which is roughly 120 miles from Port Au Prince.

"The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has mobilized its resources to assist the people of Haiti. UMCOR distribution warehouses in Illinois and Louisiana, along with others throughout the US, will collect and send supplies as quickly as it is safe and possible to do so. More help, particularly financial assistance, will be needed and that's where we come in. On Sunday, January 24, we will receive a special offering - above and beyond your regular church giving - and send it to UMCOR, designated for Haiti relief efforts.

"Remember that UMCOR adminstrative costs are covered by the denominational One Great Hour of Sharing offering received in March, which means that 100% of your giving to a specific cause, such as Haiti relief, goes to that cause. Please give generously."
